How WWE 2K22 is reinventing itself after the cataclysm of WWE 2K20

By the time WWE 2K22 lands next March, it'll have been 29 months since the wrestling series' last entry. That aberration – WWE 2K20 – was unforgettably dismal, but that isn't the merely reason expectations give birth changed. Back in October 2019, Vince McMahon's company had footling genuine competition; now there's a whole new upstart companion launching its ain gritty. Totally Elite Rassling is also headed to next-gen, and the ace-packed AEW roll – featuring CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, and more – should ensure strong gross revenue. Quite the challenge, then, for WWE 2K22 creative director Lynell Jinks.

Jinks is keen to ram home the academic degree to which winnow feedback has steered the serial' PS5 and Xbox Series X debut. It led Visual Concepts to create a 10-point development hit list, elements of which are incumbent if predictable: improved graphics (Rey Mysterio's entrance does indeed look uncannily lifelike), immersive presentation, a creation-retinue renovation. But one phrase stands out, because IT's been a feature of zealous community discussion for years - GM Mode.

Introduced in Smackdown vs Unfinished 2006, this beloved feature saw you take along the role of general manager for a brand within WWE: drafting a roster, overseeing feuds, managing individual morale. With the serial developed by THQ back then, 2K has never had a crack at its own version of GM Mode since acquiring the WWE license in 2013. Heretofore – albeit with a fresh mention.

"MyGM has been the just about requested addition to the franchise for the better part of a tenner," says Jinks. "You tin can expect to draft superstars, Quran matches, manage contracts, and prove you have what it takes to manage the all but successful brand name in sports entertainment, progressively working your way up from high school gyms to prime-time TV."

Jinks won't be drawn into further discussion of MyGM, but we coup d'oeil two screenshots. The opening shows a draft in progress, with a heel of wrestler name calling accompanied by their role (green masks for faces, Red River for heels), class ('Bruiser' for Roman Reigns', 'Fighter' for Asuka), in-game wage (Becky Lynch sets you back out $268,400), popularity and stamina. The second base image shows an event carte du jour where you can select to spectate operating theater play each turn. Intriguingly at that place's a be affixed to every match – a Tender loving care contend comes in at $5,000 – so financial direction is set to play a major factor.

The first similarity to FIFA 22's Ultimate Team raises the issue of micro-minutes, so it's valuable noting that MyFaction is a single-player mode. "MyFaction is the only mode in WWE 2K22 where purchasable VC comes into play," says Diem Pham. "It's super important to short letter that VC does not offer whatever sort of competitive vantage or put over players in a pay-to-win situation. The items purchased with VC can also be purchased with MyFaction points earned via gameplay."

Hold yourself, big blackguard

The simpler means of hitting finishers and signatures is emphatically welcome after 2K20 forced you to press two buttons at once systematic to pull off a matman's known moves.

As for that other priority, "the nigh important and nitpicking change in WWE 2K22 resides in the engine itself," says Diem Pham. "The team has rebuilt the entire gameplay and spiritedness engine from the ground equal to make every dive, kickout and finisher feel like you're sitting ringside seat at WrestleMania… We've rebuilt gameplay to contact a frictionless standard of handiness: visceral attacks, counters, combos, liberal you more options at your administration."

The numbers certainly sound impressive. WWE 2K22 retains 30,000 moves, and adds 5,000 new ones, piece all existing strikes take been recaptured and retimed. Footage of Kofi Kingston thumping Jeff Hardy in the ribs, then bulldogging his face into the mat, certainly looks impactful. But will it feel that way, and – more importantly – translate to an exciting, realistic picture game? While cautiously excited around GM Mode, that's the important question we'll live seeking to solution in an early 2022 hands-happening.
